Smart solutions for smart cities: frontierCities Acceleration and Showcase event
Last 11 and 12 October, frontierCities project held its final event at Area 42, in Brussels. The 28 grantees who benefitted from the FIWARE acceleration programme had the chance to present their apps and smart mobility solutions in front of investors and corporates, representative of cities, EC and national policy makers.
Approximately 80 people attended the first day, a close event where frontierCities grantees pitched their solutions in front of experts and investors, and took advantage of 1to1 meetings with corporates and venture capitalists such as Avet Ventures, Cleantech Invest, Ventures4Growth, Volta Ventures, Demeter Partners, and 360 Capital Partners.
The afternoon session was dedicated to a high-level panel of investors and smart cities experts about the current opportunities and challenges European cities face when adopting and investing in smart mobility solutions.
The first day was closed by a networking cocktail, where future opportunities were discussed.

Opened by Ragnar Bergström (Head of Sector, DG CONNECT, European Commission) and Sean Burke (NFS, frontierCities coordinator), the second day started with a selection of grantees presenting their apps and the outstanding commercial results achieved over the last months.
The day continued with 3 panel discussions hosting city managers, FIWARE experts, frontierCities grantees and policy makers.
Valuable inputs and experiences have been shared about the way FIWARE enabled solutions can improve the quality of life in European cities: the audience heard from some of the most successful frontierCities accelerated projects and their partners who actively contributed to the piloting of the deployed solutions.
The participants had the opportunity to hear from the users and the partners who participated in the first trials such as the students who participated in the City SoundScape pilot in Brindisi, and we learned about the new chapters opened by grantees to expand their trials around Europe, like the recently established partnership between MVMANT and the Venice and Mestre Taxi Association.
We also got the significant and enthusiastic testimonial from the Kent County Council, who first piloted the QRoutes solution in the UK and is now a satisfied customer.
During the event it was also possible to meet the 28 frontierCities projects and learn more about their solutions by visiting the exhibition area. Here live demos took place and proper insights about the smart mobility solutions where provided to the 100 event participants.
This intensive day, was closed by a panel discussion on how the European Cities can maximise the benefits of the Digital Economy for their citizens.
