In his current role as Director of the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME), Carl heads the partnership between Coventry University and Unipart. This brings together business, research and education to accelerate the exploitation and commercialisation of new technology in the transport and energy sectors. Carl is also Executive Director of the Manufacturing and Materials Research Centre at Coventry University, covering a breadth of research activities from novel processing of materials to structural integrity, computer modelling and simulation.

Carl is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Materials. He is a graduate of the University of Sheffield, where he studied Metallurgy and completed a PhD investigating lightweight metallic composites, sponsored by Alcan International.

Prior to his current role, Carl was employed by Rolls-Royce, where he delivered new high temperature coatings and associated manufacturing processes for the latest generation of Trent engines. As Head of Technology, Carl also led business improvement and advanced process control through a lean sigma approach in a Rolls-Royce joint venture manufacturing turbine coatings.

Previously, Carl was R&D Director for Dana Glacier Vandervell, where he introduced new products and processes for passenger car, heavy duty and Formula 1 applications. Notably, Carl was responsible for introducing lead-free bearings and thermal spray technology to address the End of Life Vehicle legislation.
